- Getting the keys to my first apartment.

Noughties Notebook
I can't believe I am just about to go into my sixth decade (born in the 60s). The noughties were an amazing decade and I want to celebrate all I experienced in the noughties, including:
Love
Work

After a long break, got back onto the dating market via internet dating. I had lots of fun dates, had a few long term relationships and fell in love.
- Married in November 2008.
Home
Bought my first apartment in Sydney's inner city (amazingly I can't remember if that was 2000, 2001 or 2002).
- Following my heart, I lived overseas in Leeds UK, (2007-2009).
- Bought my first digital SLR camera.
Adventure
- Visited Jodie & Dean in New York in 2006.
- Explored Paris with a lover in 2008.
- Had an adventure holiday in Peru & Cuba, including the Inca Trail in 2007.

What I learnt as a temp..
- I need to look busy, even if there is nothing to do.
- In a panic they want someone to be calm, and as its not your company it is easiest to be you.
- They want to think I am confident in my abilities, it makes them feel confident in theirs.
- They want me to make decisions whenever I can, they don't want to worry about all the same decisions.
- Flexibility is everything.
- Even if I don't know how to do something, they'd like me to give it a go.
- You can do anything in 7.5 hours that would be intolerable as a permanent job.
- Any news is received better with a smile.
- You're a never too old to learn something - and often people really do have better ideas on how to do something you've been doing for years.
- Kindness and manners are important.
- Most computer systems are the same, so if you play around you'll eventually work it out.

What I love about me....
Life seems a little tough at the moment, and I realise I have started to beat myself up a little more than usual. Mostly I am telling myself that I am not enough. Tonight I remembered a post from Definatalie about what she loved about her. My instinct was to do that on another blog, where I write a more 'diary style' but more secretively. However, for some reason that didn't feel right.
I need to be proud about this list.... which I am going to keep updating as
I am enough. What I love about myself:
- I'm adventurous and especially love travelling to places I've never been, even those in my own city, and trying food I've never tasted before.
- I am usually pretty accepting, I really judge people on their sex, colour, race, religion.
- My boobs, which are doing ok for a 40+ women.
- That I can appear very brave.
- I've turned into a pretty good camper.
- I am curious. It can drive people mad, especially my love, but I never stop asking why.
- I've got a strong design sense. I can't draw or paint, but I know what colours look good together, what objects make a lovely still life in my home and what looks good on a page.
- I'm a good friend. I can handle the hard times, as well as the good. I can listen when they need me to and I share myself with them.
- I'm generous, not always in the traditional financial way but often with my time and my words.
- My green eyes, which don't seem to be that common a colour.
- My small hands, they look nice and they fit easily into my partner's hands. They remind me of my mum's hands, even though hers are larger and stronger.
- I have great hair. It is think and healthy, and every new hairdresser tells me how lucky I am.
- That I have a strong sense of who I am - that I am an individual. I give myself permission to be different, to not be like everyone else. My family and friends sometimes lovingly (and yes it is genuinely lovingly) tease me for being odd. I celebrate my oddness.
- I have a really loud laugh. It's infectious and it makes people smile.
- That I laugh at myself. Often.
- Somehow I have turned laziness into an asset. An old boss pointed this out, and I know she really did mean it with love. She told me that my desire to work as little as possible had transformed my role and the processes I had to do. I thought through and identified the easiest way to do so many things, which would be passed on to people who replaced me.
- Inspite of myself, I keep learning.
- I've finally cured myself of my fascination with bad men. I love and am loved by a very good man.
- That I have an open mind. Mostly. I am willing to explore ideas, facts and then make up my mind.
- I take lots and lots of photos.
- I'm smart, maybe not as much as I think but there is certainly a fair few brain cells in there.
- My smile, it's teethy and wide.
- I'm usually willing to smile first. My mum always insisted on smiling at people, and now I love that I do that regularly with strangers. At the moment I am saying hi most mornings to a women who walks by me as I go to work.
- I can say sorry and mean it, and often be the first one to say it.

Life has taught me that....

- Acting as if is good enough, and is often the beginning of the real thing.
- Happiness from adventures last longer than possessions.
- People don't have to agree with me to be supportive.
- Anger has to be dealt with or it will betray you.
- Unearthing my authentic self is tougher than I ever imagined.
- If you can't decide what to do, the best thing to do is wait.
- Change is inevitable, so you might as well embrace it or, in fact, encourage it.
- Change makes me crazy, I crave it and yet it still terrifies me.
- If you change your attitude, your life will follow
- Nothing changes if nothing changes. This sadly means that if I want something to be different, I have to do something differently or think something differently
- My curiousity can lead to some amazing discoveries and therefore it is important that I continue to nurture my curiousity.
- Sometimes it's better if I don't get what I want.
- Enough. If I remember to be grateful, I will see that I already have enough, that I am enough.
- Too much expectation gets in the way of experiencing the moment.
- If I don't express my feelings (speak them out, write them out, cry them out, creatively express them) they'll blurt out at the most embarrassing times. It's therefore safer to express them as quickly as I can.
- Fear is a waste of energy; we are powerless over so many things it is pointless to focus on them.
- Feelings are never wrong. Understanding that makes arguing a much pleasanter experience.
- Some things are worth fighting for
- Sometimes you have to get lost to find yourself
- I am fine just the way I am today.
- I may as well forgive now, as I'm eventually going to have to do it to be happy.
- Friendships need to be nurtured.
- There's always time for fun.
- Goals are important, as they help you be clear about what you want. Writing them down helps, as does telling everybody about them. However, its also important not to be completely controlled by them.
- Grief has it's own journey, and it is not the same for people.
- Gratitude is my instant fixer - it really does change my mood (gratitude leads to a good attitude). There is always something to be grateful for. If you can't remember what to be grateful for when you are feeling low, make a list when you're having a good day and leave it somewhere you won't miss on a low day.
- It's not what happens to you that matters, but what matters is what you do with what happens.
- My happiness is my responsibility. It is also a choice.
- I don't have to get what I want to be happy
- If I want help, I need to ask for help. People can't read my mind. People need to be wanted so asking for help is often just as important to the other person.
- There is so many different names, God, Allah, karma, but whatever you call it, there is a higher power looking out for us all. It doesn't matter if you understand this force, it just helps to believe it.
- I am no more important than anybody else. I am no less important than anybody else.
- You can't judge your insides against others outsides. We can never really know what is going on for other people, and your thoughts are just that thoughts.
- I have to be able to laugh at myself or others will laugh at me behind my back.
- That during laughter, nothing else exists
- Laughter really is the best medicine.
- There is always something new to learn.
- If you don't learn the lesson, you'll get it again.
- I can learn the best lessons from the most surprising people. People I don't like, people who irritate me, and people who don't seem that bright.
- The worst lies I tell are the lies I tell myself.
- People often like you because of your weakness. And even more often people can dislike you for your strengths.
- I need to live what I love
- I have a lot to learn
- My mind will always jump to the problems, I need to remind it to jump to the joys
- Miracles happen, I just need to notice them.
- Mistakes happen, no matter how much I struggle with them. It's important to learn from them and you can only do this once you've accepted them.
- I never get more than I can handle, so if I am feeling like that I have to look to see where I am complicating things, where I am contributing to my sense of overwhelm.
- The pain will pass, and you'll find a way to go on. Suffering is a choice.
- Admitting what I am powerless over something helps me to re-group and move on and ends up being my secret weapon.
- Reading about other people's life, whether fact or fiction, helps me to understand my own life that much more.
- The road less travlled is easier when the baggage is lighter
- Saying you're sorry is a great start to making amends, but you have to mean it and you have to be willing to act differently next time.
- It starts with me. If I want something or somebody to be different, I have to make the first move.
- Everyone has something to teach me, especially those I don’t like
- The teacher really does arrive when I'm ready to learn.

- Everyone likes a thank you, and it is the easiest thing to give.
- The way we think, determines who we are and what happens to us.
- It isn’t what you do that matters, but how you treat people in what you
- I don't have to understand everything, and I can even benefit from things I don't really get.
- My weaknesses really can be my strengths
- To begin something new, I don't have to be willing I just have to be willing to be willing.
- It's OK to be wrong.

100 things I am grateful for my Mum for (in progress)

- Teaching me to catch. She spent hours with us all in the backyard, encouraging us in the basics of catching and throwing. People continue to be shocked that a clumsy girl like me can catch so well.
- Role modeling to me that commitment was everything - if she said she was going to do something, she did it. That flowed through to her children's commitments - especially sport - keeping your commitment to play was paramount.
- Her cooking style. Long before it was fashionable, she did healthy no-fuss meals.
- Sharing her love of craft - teaching me how to knit, cross-stitch and generally express myself creatively.
- Giving me to permission (ok encouraging) to cry over a movie, TV and books.
- My education - my Dad was from an era where a girl's education wasn't as important as a man's. My mum insisted that wasn't the case - and worked terrible jobs to pay for the education of her five daughters. Of her 8 kids, 5 went to university.
- Broadening my horizons when it came to food, she was way ahead of other Mums when it came to embracing the world of food.
- Her hands; each day when I look down at my hands I am reminded of my mum and her strength.
- Showing me that helping others, whenever I can, will make me a happier person. My Mum spent her life being of service.
- Insisting I 'look it up' when I didn't know something. When I was a little girl she made me look up the dictionary every time I came across a word I didn't know. Today I instinctively google something when I come across it for the first time.
- Sharing her love for moving her body - especially walking.
- Sharing her love of reading with me.
- My siblings - yes I know it takes two to make babies, but it was my mothers Catholicism that resulted in me having 7 siblings. Growing up I desperately wanted anything other than having so many siblings, but today I couldn't choose which ones to give up. My life would be so much poorer without them.
- For how she makes me feel when I feel sick - no one makes me feel like everything is going to be alright like she does. She'd give me her cure-all, a lemonade ice block and I'd feel instantly better.
- Her insistence I smile first - especially if I wasn't sure how I knew people.
- So many of my values come from her.
- Mum has always walked everywhere, and on good days I am reminded that walking is a great way to see the world.
- Flying half-way around the world to come to my wedding - in her 70s!
